Last night I sat up in bed at midnight and wrote 200 crappy words because I knew that I had to. I learned a long time ago that if you want to succeed at something, you need to keep at it. Don’t ever stop. As soon as you stop, you lose your momentum and get distracted, and whatever you were doing falls behind, and before you know it, you’ve failed at it.
The only reason you failed at it was because you stopped doing it.
If you have something in mind that you want to achieve, as long as you believe you can achieve it, then you will. But it requires you to do one thing. Only one thing.
I want to be a better writer, but the only way I can become a better writer is to keep on writing. So while I was lying in bed in the dark at midnight last night, all I wanted to do was sleep. But I knew that if I want to succeed at being a writer (and I do), then I needed to follow through on that commitment I made myself to write 200 crappy words every day. So I sat up and wrote something crappy.
If you make a commitment to become something, or to achieve something, and you know what you need to do to achieve it, then you better make sure you keep doing whatever it is you need to do in order to succeed at it.
If you want to, of course. Maybe you might decide it’s just not something you want to do, but you had to go through it in order to work that out. That’s fine! At least you tried it and found out you didn’t really want to do it. it’s not what you want to succeed at.
But if you really want to succeed, and you haven’t found a good enough reason why you should stop, then just don’t stop. Keep going. The only way you’ll fail is if you stop. If you keep going, eventually you WILL succeed.
The secret to successfully achieving your goals is to first work out what it is you need to do to achieve those goals, and then just keep on doing it. That’s it. Maintain the commitment to yourself, and eventually you’ll get there.
I want to be a successful writer. I’ve been writing for over 16 years. Sort of. I’ve been writing about my life and random stuff over that time. I’ll keep on doing that though, ’cause that’s what I love doing, and it’s what I’ve always been able to do for this past 16 years. But in the future I want to get better at my writing, and achieve some element of ‘success’ from it. So I’ll keep on writing. I’ll never stop!
What about you? Is there anything you really want to do, that you know you could achieve if you just kept on doing whatever it is you need to do? If you never stopped doing it, do you think that you’d achieve the success you want? Of course you would!
So get started on it now. And don’t ever stop doing it.
