A few weeks ago I wrote about how I might be going back to Canberra. A couple of days ago I came up here for a job interview today, and during the interview another recruiter joined us to talk about some possibilities he wanted to put me forward for as well. It was positive, but we’ll see how things turn out. Nothing is ever certain until you have a signed contract in front of you.
I spent a considerable amount of my time today catching up with a few peopleĀ and networking my ass off! Asking ‘who do you know that I can call’ and then getting on the phone to call them. I’ve got a few meetings tomorrow with different people, and I’ve had a number of ’email conversations’ as well, with my CV being sent off here and there.
The networking has been intense. Based on what I’ve done today, and what I’ll be doing tomorrow, I feel quite positive that I’ll be working in Canberra again soon.
Meeting and greeting and shaking hands seems to work better than emails and phone calls. I think it’s because everyone works with email and phone calls, but it gets serious when you’re arranging meetings to talk to people and pushing them to find opportunities for you.
It’s been interesting driving around Canberra, spending time in some of the cafes I used to frequent, and catching up with friends who’ve missed me. Canberra itself feels a little different to me. It feels like a place I used to call home, but is no longer my home.
I don’t know if it’ll become my home again, but it’s happened before… I lived in Canberra from 1992 to 2000, and then moved to New Zealand where I lived for 7 years before moving back to Canberra in 2007. And then in 2014 I moved to Melbourne.
Will I come back? It feels likely at the moment.
